So what is a monstrance anyway?

Basic answers, real answers for real Christians

monstrance, eucharist, adoration  Let's begin by saying that Catholic's believe in the real presence (or big word...transubstantiation) of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is a wafer type bread that has been consecrated (blessed) by a priest. The priest acting as a channel through which God created a miracle occur every time Mass is said. We believe in the real presence based on John chapter 6 (go read it, carefully) and other known factors about Jewish tradition - Passover.

The Monstrance is a sacred vessel which holds the Holy Eucharist. At special times the most holy blessed sacrament is displayed on the altar for a designated amount of time, for all to come and sit in prolonged presence of the Lord, as God is truly with us. We want to draw as close to Him as possible in worshiping Jesus, adoring Him, lifting up our prayers, and just being silent and listening to what our Lord has to say.

Not being an expert on this subject links are provided below that may help further explain.  Here is one helpful way to a better understanding of it.

Beginning with - Catholics know Jesus is with us always, he is part of us, he is our savior. We can talk to him and He will listen to us. He can talk to us and we can listen to him. We can see him in everything we do and see (trees, flowers, etc..)  We know he is present and sometimes we feel his presence. Next, when it comes to  Jesus presence in the monstrance it's like a true manifestation of Jesus coming to us, in real flesh. If we compare it earthly communicating it's like... talking to our love one on the phone; they can listen and respond. We can write them a letter or email it and our loved can reply.  At a loved ones home,  even if they are  away can be a comfort, a safe place.

With all the above different means of communicating, it's is nothing, in comparison to when your loved one is actually in your presence. They are manifested before your eyes, really there. There presence is different. You know they are really there and understand them more fully when you communicate with them or just having them present with you.  You feel loved by them and share your love for them. That's how it is with the Eucharist (Jesus) in the Monstrance. A real miracle every time you see the consecrated bread, the host.  Just think about what the definition of host means.

Remember Jesus said that his flesh was real flesh. For those who say they take the bible literally, please read John chapter 6:35-60 and specifically verses 56-60.  Further reading on this subject by Scott Hahn is highly recommended.  Scott gives a beautiful explanation of the Eucharist in terms the average lay person (you and me) can understand, in a video called The 4th Cup or read more about Eucharist in the transcripts of Scott Hahn's  The 4th Cup

You can also find out more about the real presence, Eucharist, and adoration by going to NewAdvent, a catholic website with the catechism, bible, encyclopedia, church fathers, a library and more. It's also free to use at any time.
