The image in the eye conforms to the known laws of optics, particularly to that which states that a well-lighted object can be reflected three times in an eye (Purkinje-Samson's law). A later study allowed researchers to discover in the eye, in addition to the seer (Juan Diego), Bishop Zumárraga and other people were present when the image of Our Lady appeared on the tilma. And the normal microscopic network of veins in the eyelids and the cornea of the Virgin's eyes is completely recognizable. No human painter would have been able to reproduce such details.

Juan Diego was the visionary that saw an apparition of Our Lady. The Woman had him gather a number of Castilian roses, which was unthinkable in the middle of the winter, and give them to Bishop Zumárran with a messages of her request. When the roses were dispersed out of Juan's average cactus fiber cloak called a tilma, the image you see appeared on the tilma and has been there for 470 years. The wear to the garment is in nearly the same condition as the day it appeared, even though it had been left in the open for nearly a century subjected to damp conditions, light, incenses and even an explosion. Details of the image are address strong interpretations for Indians of that time and their pagan beliefs. Even with that in mind there is still the message of Jesus is the center of the universe. Read Revalation 12: 1-2: 1A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown with twelve stars . 2 She was with child... |

Rays of the sun are bursting from behind the Woman's image. Her mantle (cloak) is blue-green. Here dress is a pale pink. A mantle of that color signifies royalty and a dress of that color signifies princess. And the stars across the mantle told the Indian people, she was greater than the stars which they worshiped as gods. On the neck hangs a brooch, the center of which is decorated with a little black cross, identical to the one embossed on the banner and helmets of the Spaniards. This is recalling the death of Christ on the Cross for the salvation of all mankind. Not a god herself since her hands were folded in prayer and her head bowed in reverence to a One greater than her. The black belt around her waist represents a maternity band. She was with child. Her foot rested on a crescent moon which signified the god Quetzalcoatl whom she clearly vanquished. Since she announced herself as the Virgin Mary to Juan and the Ever Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God. |
